Round 1 of the 2017 NYC season is in the books and we witnessed some exciting rugby league, with the first four games of the weekend coming down to the wire. In previous years, we’ve put our Team of the Week in the Weekend Wrap feature but this year, it’s got it’s own article and we’ll name a Player and Rookie of the Week as well.

The final thing to note is, like last year, our NYC Database Team of the Week is based primarily off stats, as we’re only able to watch two or so live games a week.

Player of the Week
Victor Radley (Sydney Roosters)
Radley was everywhere for the Roosters in Saturday’s win over the Titans. The lock forward ran for a game high 217 metres, made 6 tackles and set up two tries to go with the three he scored. After spending time at five-eighth, hooker and second row in 2016, Radley stepped up admirably into the lock position. Depending on which grade Nat Butcher plays in once he returns from injury, Radley may see out the season in the role.

Rookie of the Week
Hayden Loughrey (Newcastle Knights)
Recruited from Tamworth, Loughrey had a stunning debut in the Knights big win over the Warriors in Auckland. The halfback scored twice, ran for 139 metres, made two line break assists and had 9 offloads. His support play was superb, backing up his team mates for both of his tries, the second of which was a winding 30 metre run in which he beat numerous Warriors defenders.
