NYCDB Team of the Week – Round 14

Jayden Okunbor

Another exciting weekend of Holden Cup football means another tough task of naming a Team of the Week. A number of players from losing sides in Round 14 stood out this weekend, including two who scored hat tricks in their sides’ defeats.

As a reminder, we’re unable to watch every NYC game each week, so these Team of the Week articles rely heavily on the statistics provided by NRL.com.

Players of the Week
Scott Drinkwater (Melbourne Storm) & Jayden Okunbor (Canterbury Bulldogs)
In a couple of Team of the Week firsts, we have not only have two players as out Player of the Week but both whose side’s lost in Round 14. After a couple of weeks in the Queensland Cup, Scott Drinkwater returned to the Storm’s NYC side and picked up his second hat trick of the season. The Central Coast junior made four line breaks, 11 tackle breaks and ran for 182 metres in his side’s eight point loss to Cronulla. On Monday afternoon, Bulldogs’ second rower Jayden Okunbor tried everything within his power to get his side over the line. Okunbor scored three tries, ran for 129 metres, broke seven tackles, made three line breaks and assisted on four more in his side’s two point loss to the Dragons.

Rookie of the Week
Corey Horsburgh (North Queensland Cowboys)
The Cowboys’ most consistent forward in 2017, I surprised myself when I realised Corey Horsburgh hadn’t been named our Rookie of the Week this season. Averaging 147.5 metres and 29.6 tackles a game, the Redcliffe junior led from the front in his side’s 40-4 win over Parramatta on Saturday afternoon. He ran for 172 metres, made 26 tackles, had four offloads and broke four tackles in 50 minutes of game time.
