Dean Matterson

It was a weekend of big scorelines in the Holden Cup, with six games won by 20+ points, as the Top 8 begins to take shape with three rounds to play. Here is our team of top performers from Round 23.

As a reminder, we’re unable to watch every NYC game each week, so these Team of the Week articles rely heavily on the statistics provided by NRL.com.

Player of the Week
Kalyn Ponga (North Queensland Cowboys)
After a relatively quite year by his standards, the Newcastle-bound Kalyn Ponga has been back to his usual best during the Cowboys’ current four game winning streak. Against the second placed Panthers on Saturday, Ponga scored three tries, ran for 267 metres, set up a try and broke seven tackles in North Queensland’s 24-point victory.

Rookie of the Week
Jackson Willis (St George Illawarra Dragons)
It’s weird to think of him as a “rookie” at this stage of the year but another great performance in his debut year sees Jackson Willis pick up his second Rookie of the Week award. The Camden Rams junior scored a hat trick in the first 20 minutes of the Dragons’ 24-point win over the Titans, adding a try assist and 288 kick metres.
