The Souths Logan Magpies have won their first Mal Meninga Cup title after defeating the Norths Devils 18-16 at Bishop Park.

Souths Logan, who were defeated in last year’s final by the Western Mustangs, had to overcome a 16-6 half time deficit to pick up the silverware.

Heading into the game undefeated, Norths opened the scoring through centre Jack Paterson, before the Magpies hit back through lock Cruise Ten, who crashed over under the posts.

The Devils then scored twice in six minutes, with hooker Ethan Le Blanc fooling the defence close to the line with a dummy and prop Jordan Riki bursting through untouched from 10 metres out.

With strike forward David Fifita well contained, it was halfback Tanah Boyd who helped get Souths Logan back into the contest.

10 minutes after half time, the diminutive half made a break at the halfway line before setting up his fullback Fanitesi Niu to score next to the posts.

Two minutes later, Niu stepped his way through the Devils’ defence from 20 metres out to level the scores, with Boyd converting to give his side the lead.

A tense 23 minutes followed, with the Souths Logan holding on to pick up their first Mal Meninga Cup trophy.

Niu was named Man of the Match following his match-winning, two try effort.

Souths Logan will now play New South Wales’ under-18 premiers, the Penrith Panthers, in the National Final at Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, May 12.
